Looking to try canyoning for the first time? Then this tour at Heart Creek Canyon near Canmore is the one for you!

YouTube video

An easy approach, an ideal location to learn rappelling, and amazing scenery all make the Heart Creek Canyon trip the perfect choice for your first canyoning experience.

After meeting your guides and other participants at the staging area in the Heart Creek Trail parking lot, a 30 – 45 minute hike will bring you to the top of both the canyon sections, and the start of your canyon adventure. Everyone suits up and in order to ensure safety your guides will go through a mandatory rappel and rope safety clinic.

There are a total of five rappels, interspersed with some scrambling and hiking, and the introductory short rappels allow you to ease into rappelling and increase in length as you progress down the canyon. Your adventure finally culminates with an exciting 60 foot wet waterfall rappel and slide (this part is optional, it is possible to hike around the lower falls if you prefer).

Included
  • All equipment including a wetsuit, wetsuit top, neoprene booties, helmet, and harness
  • Small group size (up to 8 guests per guide)
  • Professional Guides
  • Light snack & refreshment
Transport Options
  • Meet at Heart Creek Trailhead

The best parts of the tour for most people include the following:

1

Learn rope rappelling

Upper Heart Canyon is the perfect location to learn and develop your rope rappelling skills. Introductory short rappels allow you to ease into rappelling and increase in length as you progress down the canyon.
2

60 foot wet waterfall rappel and slide

Your canyoning adventure culminates with an exciting 60ft wet waterfall rappel and slide (this is optional: it is possible to hike around the lower falls).
Included
  • All equipment including a wetsuit, wetsuit top, neoprene booties, helmet, and harness
  • Small group size (up to 8 guests per guide)

The tours commence at 9:00am and 1:00pm and run for approximately 4 hours.
The tour includes all canyon specific gear and equipment including a 7mm wetsuit, 3-4mm wetsuit top, helmet, harness, rappel device, neoprene booties and a waterproof bag for any valuables. Your small group tour will be led by a professional guide in a small group of up to 8 people.
Please meet your guide at Heart Creek Canyon, located 17km east Canmore and approximately a 10 minute drive from Canmore and 25 minutes from Banff. Full driving directions will be included in your booking confirmation.
All technical equipment including a thick wetsuit is provided. It is recommended (for increased comfort) that participants bring Merino or fleece under-layers if they have any (but it is not required). Running shoes or light hiking shoes work best a good pair of socks are also recommended in case you get cold on your feet although we provide neoprene socks as well. No sandals or open toed shoes. Do not bring cotton t-shirts which will not keep you warm when you are wet. If you are a paddler or a surfer, paddle or surf shirts (neoprene ones) work great and are a good item to bring. The top half of the canyon may be dry but the bottom half is always wet. The waterfall source remains cold throughout the whole year even on hot days. If available a rain jacket or hardshell also works well as an exterior layer (but it is not required)

The recommended clothing list includes: a bathing suit, towel, a pair of sturdy runners or light hikers that can get wet (for inside the canyon, no sandals or open toed shoes), a rain jacket or hardshell, day backpack to carry up gear, extra clothes to change into after the trip (will remain in the vehicle) and your waterproof Camera or GoPro.

Participants do not require any previous rope or rappelling experience, they must though be relatively comfortable with heights. All guests must be capable of moderate to advanced physical activity.

It is a good idea to change into a bathing suit before arriving at the meeting point. There are rudimentary public toilets at the Heart Creek Trailhead. The group will “suit up” and change into wet suits before rappelling into the canyon which is after our short approach hike up the top of both canyon sections. Please also keep in mind that there are no services at the staging area. The closets gas station is in Deadmans Flats.
There is a 48 hour cancellation policy, which allows you to change/cancel or refund your booking up to 48 hours outside your booked tour (up to 7 days for group bookings).
Tips are not expected, but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted.
