Wildlife sightings – September 14

Elk and sheep and muskrats, oh my!

I know what you’re thinking – seeing elk and big horned sheep is sure neat, but muskrats?

Don’t worry, they’re a LOT cooler than their name makes them out to be.

Think of them as field mice turned mermaid. The cool thing about muskrats is that they’re land animals who have actually adapted to life in and around the water. They even have large feet that act as flippers, which makes them crazy good swimmers (Michael Phelps who?)

And if you think you get cranky when you’re hungry, that’s nothing companred to a muskrat. During winterimte these cheeky little creatues can find their food even when it’s buried a metre under snow or deep within ice-cold water.

Moral of the story – you don’t want to get in the way of a hungry muskrat and his dinner!
