Located on the edge of Banff National Park, Ghost Canyon is one of the most secluded, wild, and spectacular canyon trips you’ll experience anywhere.

YouTube video

An all day adventure requiring 4×4 access, this spectacular experience rewards any visitor with remote mountain vistas and a canyon experience second to none.

After meeting your guides and other participants at the staging area in the Heart Creek Trail parking lot, it’s approximately a 1.5 hour drive by van and then a 30 – 45 minute hike to the start of your canyon adventure. Everyone suits up and in order to ensure safety, your guides will go through a mandatory rappel and rope safety clinic with all participants. There are a total of four rappels, interspersed with some scrambling, hiking, as well as several slides and easy but fun pool jumps. The entire canyon takes approximately 3 – 4 hours to descend.

The straight forward nature of the rappels makes this a great trip even for beginners who are looking for a bit more, yet the phenomenal jumps, slides and surroundings, keep it interesting even for veteran canyoneers. An all around spectacular full day experience.

The tours commences at 8am and runs for approximately 8 hours, including a 1.5 hour shuttle each way to Ghost Canyon and a 30 – 45 minute hike to the starting point.
The tour includes a shuttle service from the Heart Creek Canyon Trailhead to Ghost Canyon and all canyon specific gear and equipment including a 7mm wetsuit, 3-4mm wetsuit top, helmet, harness, rappel device, neoprene booties and a waterproof bag for any valuables. Your small group tour will be led by a professional guide in a small group of up to 8 people.
Please meet your guide at Heart Creek Canyon, located 17km east Canmore and approximately a 10 minute drive from Canmore and 25 minutes from Banff. Ghost Canyon is a remote area located just north of Banff and all participants will be shuttled to the location from the Heart Creek Trail parking lot. Full driving directions will be included in your booking confirmation.
All technical equipment including a thick wetsuit is provided. It is recommended (for increased comfort) that participants bring Merino or fleece under-layers if they have any (but it is not required). Running shoes or light hiking shoes work best a good pair of socks are also recommended in case you get cold on your feet although we provide neoprene socks as well. No sandals or open toed shoes. Do not bring cotton t-shirts which will not keep you warm when you are wet. If you are a paddler or a surfer, paddle or surf shirts (neoprene ones) work great and are a good item to bring. The top half of the canyon may be dry but the bottom half is always wet. The waterfall source remains cold throughout the whole year even on hot days. If available a rain jacket or hardshell also works well as an exterior layer (but it is not required)

The recommended clothing list includes: a bathing suit, towel, a pair of sturdy runners or light hikers that can get wet (for inside the canyon, no sandals or open toed shoes), a rain jacket or hardshell, day backpack to carry up gear, extra clothes to change into after the trip (will remain in the vehicle) and your waterproof Camera or GoPro. It’s recommended to bring a lunch for this tour.

Participants do not require any previous rope or rappelling experience, they must though be relatively comfortable with heights. All guests must be capable of moderate to advanced physical activity.

It is a good idea to change into a bathing suit before arriving at the meeting point. There are rudimentary public toilets at the Heart Creek Trailhead. The group will “suit up” and change into wet suits before rappelling into the canyon which is after our short approach hike up the top of both canyon sections. Please also keep in mind that there are no services at the staging area. The closets gas station is in Deadmans Flats.
There is a 48 hour cancellation policy, which allows you to change/cancel or refund your booking up to 48 hours outside your booked tour (up to 7 days for group bookings).
Tips are not expected, but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted.
